New vet-to-pet-owners cutting-edge book aims to educate pet owners: a complete, comprehensive and up-to-date guide to 21st century health care for cats and dogs

PRESS COPY
“Sometimes, implementation of new knowledge can be frustratingly slow. It is probably unavoidable that there will be a time-lag before new scientific insights are implemented in every veterinary practice” says Lise Hansen, veterinary surgeon of 25 years’ standing, and author of new book, The Complete Book of Cat and Dog Health, who wants to help pet owners make informed choices.

It’s been known for some time now that most dogs do not need annual boosters against parvovirus, distemper and hepatitis, vaccines that, traditionally, were given every year, with some vets still routinely administering them every third year. Based on current professional guidelines, what we actually should do is give them to puppies only, and never to adult dogs unless a blood test (titre test) indicates that protection has failed. This is the correct approach based on current scientific recommendations. We know this because the independent veterinary immunologists who make up the vaccine guideline group of the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) have been telling us this for years. Even so, some veterinary clinics still don't even offer titre testing ...

Another area where new discoveries have led to a change in recommended practice is neutering. Just six years ago, nobody knew that a routine bitch spay can dramatically increase the animal’s risk of cancer, osteoarthritis, allergies, and a range of other health problems. Now that we know, no healthy animal should be neutered without careful weighing-up of the facts.

“We need to update our approaches to animal health care. There can be a huge discrepancy between what we know and what we actually do. Every pet owner should check with their vet that their advice on topics such as vaccination and neutering are inline with current scientific recommendations” says Lise Hansen, whose ground breaking book The Complete Book of Cat and Dog Health” is published October 21, 2019

Dog Training Weekly review
“… an inspiring approach to animal treatment … a comprehensive health care book … superb photos, easy to use and understand layout … excellent in all aspects … a book no dog or cat lover should be without.”

ABOUT THE BOOK
A complete and comprehensive guide to health care for cats and dogs, providing invaluable advice on essential aspects of care, such as diet and vaccinations, as well as a guide to holistic treatments.

The first part of the book describes the main lifestyle choices every dog and cat owner makes, whether or not they are aware of them: settling in a new puppy or kitten, vaccination, neutering, diet, finding the right veterinarian, and caring for the ageing animal.

The second part describes the main holistic modalities and their relevance when animals become sick. What they are, how they work, when they are useful, and how to find a practitioner. Also includes chapters on osteopathy, homeopathy, acupuncture, Bach's flower remedies, and herbal medicine.

The third part of the book discusses a range of common health problems in dogs and cats, both from a conventional veterinary point of view and from an holistic perspective, and aims to help the owner understand the condition they are facing, as well as providing tips on how to supplement their veterinarian's advice and treatment.
